I am partial to class not being an identity. It’s when people try to paint it as such that it disturbs me.

But tackling your question on class mobility briefly, it isn’t so much the case that you can’t change your identity, as much as if were say black and rich, you’re first and foremost a rich person. Wealth exerts a heavier influence on your social standing than strict identity — I don’t think people can easily claim otherwise.
