Well here’s the thing. Gamergate can’t only serve a function of only what it purports to be in favor of. Whether the original GG was misogynistic or not is irrelevant — the fact that its recent incarnation predominantly targets women is the thing that makes it misogynistic. GG was the movement to have popularized alt-boards like 4chan and 8chan where that behavior is commonplace. Removing GG the ideology from GGers is almost impossible because of how the two kept feeding into each other. I disagree with the notion that GG is somehow a defunct movement — just because people who profess themselves as GG are nowhere to be found doesn’t mean there’s A LOT of people emulating their ideas.
